Country of manufacture: Italy

Orvieto, Viterbo,

Alternatively, it is thought to be a kiln from central Italy.

Period: Around the 28th century

Material: Ceramic (tin-glazed majolica)

Size: Width 12cm (18cm including handle), Height 6cm

"Majolica Archaica" — Early Majolica.

In the 13th century, the tin glaze technique was introduced from the Islamic world across the Mediterranean.

This is the first time it has bloomed in Italian soil.

The only colors you can use are copper green (lamina) and manganese brown.

Even before the vibrant, polychrome paintings of the Renaissance came into being—

Here you will find the most primal expression of Italian ceramics.

Orvieto, Viterbo, Pisa, Faenza, etc.

Fired in kilns in cities of central Italy,

Birds, fish, deer, coats of arms, and plants were frequently depicted.

At the bottom of the prospect, there was a single bird.

With only two colors of brush—green and brown—

It is depicted with a free and expansive style.

This shape, with its two ears that open like a ring,

The "Scodella" was a dish used daily on the tables of medieval Italy.

These were everyday dishes used for serving soup or porridge.

The white glaze on the tin gradually faded to a vanilla color over several centuries.

The cracks covering the entire surface run like a fine map.

The glaze has peeled off the rim and handle, revealing the color of the clay.

Each and every one of them is a record of the time this vessel has endured.

Not inside a glass case in a museum,

The work of nameless craftsmen, found on someone's everyday dinner table.

And now, after centuries, it has reached us here.

That in itself is like a quiet miracle.

Perfect for display shelves or windowsills.

It's a tiny fragment of the Middle Ages that fits in the palm of your hand.

Chipped, cracked, and dull—

None of these can be replicated by human hands.

The kind of expression that can only be created over many years,

It resides within this small vessel.
